THE SETTING

Beyond the Pale takes place in a site of fascinating historical and archaeological significance and spectacular scenery. Both the site itself – Glendalough Estate – and the wider Glendalough Valley that it sits in, spurred our imagination of what a festival here could entail…

This is one of the most beautiful and best-known sites in Ireland and, as well as being of archaeological and historical interest, it is rich in flora and fauna. Deer, wild goats, stoats, badgers, otters, squirrels, mountain hares, hedgehogs and more can be seen if visitors tread quietly and look and listen carefully… and when Beyond The Pale’s temporary community moves to the site, we take care to ensure this natural beauty remains unspoilt.

Sitting in close proximity to the valley on 1400 acres of mountain pasture and woodland, Glendalough Estate is a secluded and sheltered paradise with incredible vistas of Wicklow National Park. Situated beneath Djouce Mountain and close to Lough Dan, with the Avonmore River running through it, the land includes Scarr Mountain and indeed a section of the famous Wicklow Way walking route traverses the estate.
